Aware of their emotions, they have learned to let them out. People over here may appear dangerous to those at the subdued end of the spectrum. On this end of the spectrum, people lead quiet, detached lives, abiding by the unspoken rules of their community, playing it safe so as to avoid the tiresome work of suppressing new trauma.Īt the other extreme, emotions are like raw nerve endings. Any twinge of sadness that manages to work its way through is quickly strangled, along with whatever part of our humanity it attached itself to. ![]() At one extreme, painful memories and raw emotions are stuffed deep inside and buried under layer after layer of thick callous. ![]() ![]() There certainly isn’t any attempt to make this an objective collection of titles. ![]() ![]() But, yes, there were an awful lot of titles and authors I’d never heard of, and I very much enjoyed reading why Russell had chosen them for inclusion. The fifth is The Unspeakable Skipton by Pamela Hansford Johnson, perhaps one of the best-remembered names in the book. Four of those were actually books I discussed in my DPhil thesis ( The Brontes Went To Woolworths by Rachel Ferguson, The Haunted Woman by David Lindsay, Flower Phantoms by Ronald Fraser and – hurrah! – Miss Hargreaves by Frank Baker). Of course, bibliophiles who tend to read slightly more obscure books will ask, ‘Are these really forgotten?’ And of course they are not all completely obscure books, but I have only read five of the 50. It’s exactly the sort of book I can’t resist, and it was every bit as enjoyable as I’d hoped. One of the books I took on holiday to read was also one of the books I’ve bought under Project 24 – Fifty Forgotten Books (2022) by R.B. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are secrets he’s been keeping, and when I find out what they are, I want to do everything in my power to help him–even though he’s telling me he can’t be helped. I realise there’s a reason he’s so closed off and angry. But the longer we’re out here together, the more I learn about my prickly half monster companion Moth. I’m also going to try very hard to ignore how mindnumbingly beautiful he is, even when he’s scowling at me. But I’m not going to rise to his childish insults and barbed words. And he’s in love with a raider who definitely does not love him back, and he seems determined to take it out on me. Problem is, I’m making this journey with the prickliest and most arrogant guy I’ve ever met, who seems to immediately hate me on sight. ![]() ![]() And I know exactly where it is, because I’ve been there. Somehow, that simple pit stop turns into a seemingly impossible quest to get this camp’s missing leader out of the prison where he’s being held and forced to fight monsters and other humans. There are some good criticalstudies, the one I like the most being Nina Auerbach’s Our Vampires,Ourselves (1995). ![]() Thequestion is: what is a vampire? There are all the ‘factual’ answers, thestudies of myths & legends, but there are also all the many variations on a theme that various writers haveinvented to make their particular narratives work. That’s where this list began, & as I read(some) more, I have added to it, for pleasure only. My case is fairly straightforward I had read somevampire fiction, as a sub-category of dark fantasy, and enjoyed them then Idecided to give a course on Twentieth Century Vampires in Winter 2005, &felt I should read a lot more. And there are some recent novels I haven’t caught up to yet, some of which Iexpect to be quite good. ![]() It’s an essay/annotated list perhaps, but don’texpect any deep criticism, at best just something close to a series of reviews. There’s an awful lot of vampire fiction out there, & a lot of it is prettyawful.
